Easiest way to transfer my site to JPC?

    Hi all

I have been with another VPS for a couple of Months (Which I had discovered JPC first) as my current host service is appaling to say the least

anyway, I have an IPB Community Forum with a large gallery of images etc that I would like to transfer across to my new VPS here at JPC

Is there an easy method for doing this? or do I have to use my FTP program to download/ backup everything first & then re upload & then transfer the database?

I am using a Linux VPS plan on both the old & new Hosts

Any comments / suggestions would be appreciated

I can easily re upload the forum with no issues its the galleries that drive me insane because they are over 400 meg in size & take forever to upload via my adsl, if there is a method for a server to server transfer I'd appreciate ideas?

I did notice the migrate option but that appears to migrate the entire VPS software as well & I don't want that

Thanks in advance & sorry to make my very first post a question for help

You could log into your new VPS via SSH and the FTP the files from your old server to your new VPS directly.

Or you could go to your client area here and open a ticket to sales and ask for their assistance.
    Good luck

Hi. Welcome to JPC. Don't worry that your first post is a help request. That's what this forum is all about!

Are you using a control panel at all (cPanel, Interworx, Plesk, etc.)? If so, there is probably a mechanism for moving accounts from one server to another (possibly the "migrate" option you mentioned). This would move an entire user account (web pages, mail, databases, etc) and is the best way to go provided you are using the same control panel on both sides.

If you can't do a CP-based transfer, I'd recommend connecting to your current VPS via the shell (SSH) and initiating a command line transfer from there. Your best bet for that is probably to use rsync over SSH. I don't have time to write up instructions on how to do that right now, but there are several tutorials on the web that might are helpful and several forum members use rsync to do regular backups, so we'll be here to help you out if you get stuck.

Also, you'll want to make a dump of your databases (search for mysqldump, assuming you're using MySQL), transfer the dump file(s), and use them to create new databases on the new host rather than just transferring the actual database files, which is often unreliable.

Sorry for being a bit cryptic right now. Hopefully a couple of web searches will get you on the right track, though. If not, I'll try to post some more detailed instructions later when I have more time.

*must remember to have coffee before reading replies to own thread

Thanks guys for the fast response, I have to admit I have never gotten into the whole SSH thing but I am prepared to learn it better

I am using Plesk on both hosts so will look into th emigrate option but I thought that was going to migrate my plesk software etc as well?

the other options look interesting too, will definately research & check them out, thanks so much for the fast input (will definately have to wait for my days off, too many distractions by phones at work)

also the Mysql dump sounds interesting, never done this before, I've always just exported the database & re imported it into a new one, what would the benefits of a dump be?

Thanks again guys, really apprecaite it

& thanks for the welcome too

I assume you're using the export option in phpMyAdmin to do the export. If that's the case then there is really nothing different between that and mysqldump. mysqldump is just the command line utility to export the database. Either way you'll end up with a text file of SQL statements sufficient to recreate the database.

MySQL stores all of that data in files elsewhere (usually somewhere like /var/mysql) with separate files for each table and index you have on your database. In theory you can just copy these files to the new server without doing an export/dump, but because MySQL stores a lot of info in RAM for quick access you can sometimes loose data if you simply copy those files while the MySQL server process in running. Doing an export or dump ensures that you have everything, though it does take a bit longer to recreate everything on the new server.

    Welcome to Jag!
    -Daniel

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

I have another *groans* question I tried to migrate by domain but when the migrate calls up my site it shows a red x beside the domain I wish to transfer stating that it is already hosted by Plesk (yes that is why I am trying to migrate from 1 plesk to another

It alows me to transfer my second domain, but not the main one? any ideas whether there might be a setting in Plesk or my admin / Plesk that I need to change???

    I've come to a roadblock,

    my appreciations in advance

*sorry for double post but I couldn't edit my last

never mind re my last I actually used my brain & realised the problem, I had already created an identical domain name up so it wouldn't transfer the identical domain, once I removed the newly created empty domain it allowed me to select the correct domain to transfer, will let you know how it goes *crosses fingers*
