    FTP Issues

I have 2 vps servers with jagpc running centOS running WHM and cPanel. Everything is default, I haven't changed anything from the default jag install. When I go to FTP I can upload a number of different files and then it freezes on me. This sometimes happens when listing directores, or just connecting. I have to constantly reconnect to get filezilla to process the remaining que. Today I had to upload over 2000 files. Every 200 files or so it will get stuck on the list or transfer command and I have to close filezilla and restart it. This happens on both my servers and happens in filezilla and in smartFTP as well as in both active and passive mode with no success. Also tried it on 2 different networks so I am starting to believe this is a jagpc problem.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

I know I can tar the files and upload them but I can not train employees that dont know much about computers to do that, it was hard enough explaining ftp to them.

For example, just got stuck again:

    Code:
    Status:	Starting upload of C:\Documents and Settings\******\My Documents\Web Sites\*******\OrangeBoxWorkplace\Themes\classic\images\spanish\search.gif
    Command:	PORT 71,***,***,***,27,88
    Response:	200 PORT command successful
    Command:	STOR search.gif

I have the same problem. Tried same options as you. I gave up on FTP. I use WinSCP via SSH to do all my file transfers now. It is FTP not JPC I believe as I have had this happen at numerous hosts. With WinSCP I have had no file transfer errors.

This is a typical problem of some firewalls/routers not able to cope with ftp properly. SFTP is best option.

Is sftp on by default on VPS servers with WHM?

I just tried the program Frank mentioned and it seems to be working, so I guess sFTP is enabled by default. Thanks, this problem was driving me nuts. I'll see how this works.

    Yep! Use SFTP or SCP!

I remember when I still used normal FTP I had that problem, more so in Filezilla than say Cute_FTP

But SFTP I've never had that problem!

Set it to use SCP. Vinnie ole boy has a detailed settings tutorial for JPC servers here:

You can use filezilla with SFTP. I normally use WinSCP, but on occasion I use filezilla.

SSH did help a lot but I am still having similar issues, just not as often. Are there any specific ports that need to be opened on my end for this not to happen? It is starting to drive me insane. And it seems that JagPC is the only host I have this issue with. My windows FTP server works fine. In fact to test this I unzipped a phpBB3 installation on my desktop. I uploaded once to my VPS here using SSH and had to restart the que over 5 times to upload the 800+ files. I took those same files and uploaded them to my windows server using regular FTP, worked the first time without a single issue. So I am having a hard time blaming my router or firewalls for this. And this is happening on both VPS servers I have here, not just one.

It could be the FTP server software you are running. I remember a while back (a few years now) that JPC changed the FTP server on all of their shared servers from the cPanel default because of performance problems. I don't recall what the old or new server was/is, nor do I know if cP is still even using the same software for "stock" setups these days, but its worth a look.

I am using cPanel on both servers here, I wonder if that is the issue. Thanks Jason, I might have to open up a ticket for this.
