    Named Server Confusion NS1 NS2 ???

    <Example From Welcome Email>
    ---------------------------------------
    Account/Server Login Details
    ---------------------------------------
    VPS Server Node: theirnode.nocdirect.com
    Hostname: vps.mydomain.com
    IP Address: xx.xx.xxx.12
    xx.xx.xxx.13
    xx.xx.xxx.14

    ---------------------------------------
    Server Nameservers
    ---------------------------------------

    VPS Server Node: their.nocdirect.com
    Hostname: vps.mydomain.com
    IP Address: xx.xx.xxx.12
    xx.xx.xxx.13
    xx.xx.xxx.14

    ns1.mydomain.com
    ns2.mydomain.com

    DNS has been set on your VPS to the above Nameservers corresponding to
    your Primary Domain. You need to setup these nameservers with your
    domain name registrar to point to the Secondary and Tertiary IP as
    listed at the top of this email.

    </Example From Welcome Email>

    <br>

    <Example From My WHM>

    Main Shared Virtual Host IP xx.xx.xxx.12
    Hostname vps.mydomain.com
    Primary Nameserver ns1.mydomain.com
    Secondary Nameserver ns2.mydomain.com
    Tertiary Nameserver

    </Example From My WHM>

    xx.xx.xxx.14 = NS2

    Or is this correct?

    xx.xx.xxx.12 = NS1
    xx.xx.xxx.13 = NS2
    xx.xx.xxx.14 = ??? This is an extra inculded with my package.

    Also in WHM in the Nameserver Ips I have
    xx.xx.xxx.12 NS1.mydomain.COM
    xx.xx.xxx.13 NS2.mydomain.COM

    It just doesn't look right? When they set this vps up do they set through /var/named/ or something ???

    Yep when they turnup my new vps they set the ips wrong in whm. I will edit the files manually myself. Man you guys really need to check your work!!! I've been sitting here for 24 hours waiting with no joy.

    Incorrect
    -----
    69.xx.xxx.214 ns1.mydomain.com
    69.xx.xxx.215 NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM
    69.xx.xxx.216 NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM
    Yup, that's rather wrong.

    Correct
    -----
    The "standard" way of using your 3 IPs is:

    69.xx.xxx.214 The shared IP for your domains - Nothing to do with nameservers.
    69.xx.xxx.215 NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM
    69.xx.xxx.216 NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM

    For Christ's sake... err...

    On a standard Jag VPS setup, unless something has changed recently, the first IP they issue you with is the "main" IP of your VPS and the one that is shared by your web sites.

    The following 2 IPs are for your name-servers, so it should look like this:

    xx.xx.xxx.12 is the shared IP for your web sites
    xx.xx.xxx.13 is your NS1.yourdomain.com
    xx.xx.xxx.14 is your NS2.yourdomain.com

    You need to register the NS1 and NS2 IPs as hostnames for your domain at GoDaddy's registry, and then set your domain to use those 2 name-servers. Once you've done that, propagation will start to take place. Many folks will try to tell you that propagation can take 2 or 3 days, but in reality you could well start resolving within 20 minutes or so.

    Yep I got it now thanks for your post.
    In fact it was your post buried somewhere that finaly solved my problem...
    I should be able to sort this myself by editing /var/named/
    As you can see tech had it wrong in WHM

    Main Shared Virtual Host IP xx.xx.xxx.12
    Hostname vps.mydomain.com
    Primary Nameserver ns1.mydomain.com
    Secondary Nameserver ns2.mydomain.com
    Tertiary Nameserver

    Nameserver Ips
    xx.xx.xxx.12 NS1.mydomain.COM
    xx.xx.xxx.13 NS2.mydomain.COM

    I would not manually edit the file but do it from WHM... If you manually edit it, you risk cPanel over-writing it the next update it runs...

    I believe it is under Basic Setup in WHM.

    They are locked in place in whm. You cannot do anything to them...

    I use my first IP for my host name and also my first domain name server. The second IP for my second name server and I have the third one free for whatever use I deem later.

    You CAN share IP's like this no problem. All has been working fine on my VPS since day one. So JAG setup was not in error at all.

    Did it feel good?

    I use my first as the shared IP of my sites, the second as ns1 and a dedicated IP for one site that needs an SSL cert, and the third for ns2. The third IP may also get put into service for a dedicated IP for another site soon as I may be adding a cert to that if the organization for whom I host the site decides to do some of the stuff they are talking about doing.

    Help

    We bought a VPS the other night and are setting it up now. I have used the 2 exclusive IPs for the name servers on Godaddy. Then in plesk when i set up my domain i chose the shared IP address.

    Is this correct?

    The reason i ask is because when i look at the DNS settings for that domain it shows the A name records like so.

    ns1.mysite.com. A xx.xx.xxx.56
    ns2.mysite.com. A xx.xx.xxx.56

    And im wondering if thats how its supposed to be? I would of those those should be the Exclusive Ips to match the Name servers on Godaddy.

    Any thoughts ?

    Yes match them with the ones you registered them on godaddy with.
