How many maximum domains do we host on a single VPS?

Depends on your control panel and if they impose any limits. Otherwise technically there is no limit. But practically speaking the limit will depend on your hardware and configuration.

Some control panel options allow a limited number of sites (JPC sometimes gives out free 5 domain Plesk licenses with specials, for example). If your CP doesn't have a limit (I think most don't) then it is a matter of how many sites your VPS can support.

There are a lot of factors that go into determining this, the biggest of which is probably how much traffic the sites you are hosting get. More traffic means more CPU resources and more memory. Another big factor is the type of sites you host: highly dynamic sites that rely on lots of database access will take more resources than static HTML-only sites. If all you are doing is serving up a few static web pages and their related graphics each day then you could literally host hunders of different sites on the VPS. If, on the other hand, you are hosting a highly active bulletin board or something similar then you might only manage a singe site (if the VPS can handle it at all).
