Upgrades in Plesk rarely go smooth. Before upgrade you need to make sure that the latest Plesk is compatible with the OS installed on your VPS. Plesk support doesn't recommend using Plesk on any other OS than specified. You can check that at:

    ftp://download1.swsoft.com/Plesk/Plesk8.3/

You can always try upgrading the Plesk to latest release but before that make full backup of VPS from VZPP so in case anything goes wrong, you can get the working VPS again.

If you are having any issue with Plesk after upgrade, please open a Support ticket and we will check it out.

I asked to be upgraded to 8.3 for awstats to work properly. The upgrade went ok and whatever issues I had (errors after logging in etc.) were fixed promptly but awstats still didn't work as expected (see my post about awstats).

Yeah, after going from 8.1 to 8.2 and now from 8.2 to 8.3 - the best thing to do is to do it yourself then have support clean up any issues. That is the most efficient way to get it done.
