A SDX is a shared server with fewer clients on it (about 10% of the clients of a typical shared box is the number I've heard in the past). It is intended as a "bridge" for sites that are too big for regular shared hosting but not quite big enough for their own fully dedicated server. As it is a shared server it is fully managed. As there are fewer clients, there are more generally resources available to a site at a given time. Because the VPS is virtualized and because every instance must run its own services (vs. sharing a single set among all accounts on SDX) the VPS will have higher resource needs which equates to fewer resources available to your sites.

VPS is a virtual server. Basically software installed on the server allows it to emulate hardware so that multiple operating systems can be installed and run concurrently on a single server. With a VPS you get root access and can install your own, custom services which you can't do on SDX. JPC provides level 2 management to VPSes, but they don't actively monitor them the way they do for SDX--in other words, you are free to ask for support, but you will need to ask. If your VPS crashes, for instance (mine never has in the almost year and a half that I've had it), and you need help restoring it, you'll need to open a support ticket. If your SDX box crashes JPC will be fully responsible for getting it back online.

SDX is for people who need resources, VPS is for people who need control. For the vast majority of sites out there SDX will be the better choice. If you need to run special server-level software (custom services, different database (MySQL is standard on SDX), etc.) or you just like to tinker with highly customized setups (as I do) then VPS is for you.

VPS can also host multiple sites in separate accounts where as SDX is just a single cPanel account (it can host multiple sites, but only has one cPanel login), but if you just need the ability to add multiple accounts you'll probably be better served by a reseller account.
