Less RAM avaliable in 64bit linux VPS

    Hi everybody.

This is my third VPS in JaguarPC, but the first one that has a 64bit OS. All of my VPS's are Discovery Plans, and my average RAM usage is about 300 MB. I wonder what would be happening, because in my other VPS's (Debian 32bit), I could use as many as 800 MB RAM during peak hours without the privvmpages parameter to collapse, but in this VPS, when the RAM Usage reaches 300 MB, I'm already in the black zone.

Does anybody knows what would be happening? I'm using amd64 packages, and compiling for the nocona architecture.

    Hi Uthark,

I suggest that you open a support ticket so that support can check if your privvmpages value is set correctly according to your VPS plan and matches your other VPSs.

The 800 MB does seem a bit lucky though: according to the specs on the sales pages those VPSses can't burst above 512.

Uthark, maybe your VPS isn't setup with the correct amount of memory you purchased.

Gwaihir, the VPS systems that i manage have a named burst limit of 800MB but the truth is that none of them can burst over 300MB of memory, possibly a hard limit imposed to maintain a stable hardware node (but its a bit of cheating when the advertised burst limit is so much higher).

Still, if we are using that much memory then we have some kind of problem... memory leaks, cpanel running with mailman, overloaded server etc...
