Secondary hosting...?

Ok.
I'm curious about this because of what happened with my clients, but I'm wondering if there's a way to set up hosting that we can 'switch to' until issues with our primary hosting is resolved.
I know we should have backups (and did until the beginning of the week when the one I was using dropped off the web as far as I can tell) but is there anything else we could be doing?
Any way to run the sites off one server and then copy certain accounts to another server?

I suppose they can setup something like this for you:

.. but you'd need a second server for it, so it will have significant costs attached.
