Main domain setup & getting started with whm

    Hi

I'm a total noob when it comes to cpanel/whm and a vps account

I've always either used a webhosting account and on the linux servers I've ran at home done everything 'by hand'

After logging into whm I'm almost tempted to say just ditch the control panel and do everything the 'old-fashioned' way ... where the hell do I start!

The first thing I looked at that I'm not sure where to start with is the server's main domain name, I have a domain I'm going to repoint to the main vps ip once I've tied up everything on the hosting account it currently points to

I don't see anywhere to set things up for the domain, such as the apache stuff, mail accounts etc etc, do I have to add the domain as an account in whm first?

I'm guessing that if I add the domain as an account I'll then get a whole lot of other options for it once logged into the account created for it

Another thing, the domain is hosted with a different provider, should I get them to point vps.mydomainname.com to the server's ip as well as mydomainname.com

I kind of expect the dns on the vps itself to handle that bit, but it don't hurt to check

The other domains they handle for me point to my home server and for those they map the subdomains their end and I then add them to dns on the server itself my end, just wondering if I have to do the same with the vps

There may be some learning curve in the beginning but you will enjoy using WHM/CPanel as soon as you get little used to and comfortable with it.
The WHM panel is for server/vps wide management, i.e. it will allow you to setup hosting accounts, where each hosting account will have its own control panel i.e. CPanel to manage its emails, databases etc.

Yes, first thing you need to do is to create an account from WHM for your domain.

The below two links to flash tutorials for WHM and CPanel will be helpful in doing this :

Once the account is created , you will be able to access its own CPanel and manage that account from that.

For Nameservers/DNS , yes you can either use your current DNS provider and make them point yourdomain.com and the hostname vps.yourdomain.com to your VPS IP here, or you can simply setup the DNS here on your VPS and start using it. The steps for that would be to first register two Nameservers like ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com at your registrar against the two additional IPs available on the VPS , once they are registered you can start to use them for any domains that you will host on your vps.

Also if you have any confusion with any of the steps above or other wise in getting started then please open a support ticket and we will guide you with anything you need.

    Cheers for that Rizwan

Reassuring to know I was thinking along the right lines, though I hadn't thought of using the extra two ips as nameservers I have to admit

Comes of only ever having one ip to work with in the past I suppose, but busy at the moment so I'll look at doing all that later today

    Thanks again
