How do I update Ruby on a VPS account?

Looks like 1.8.5 is installed. 1.8.7 is recommended for Rails development. I tried "sudo apt-get install ruby-full build-essential" but apparently apt-get isn't a recognized command. Is apt not installed either?

Just checking, because I'm quite new to this, but...if your VPS is CentOS, then perhaps you are supposed to use yum rather than apt-get? I see on my VPS that I have yum, but not apt-get.

Did you get your ruby version issue resolved? I'd like to do the same thing as you, but would like to know if you learned anything in this process?

Yes, apt-get is debian based package manager/installer and yum is the alternative on RedHat based distros like CentOS. If you have cPanel on your CentOS VPS, you can try the guidelines here to install latest version of ruby. I would recommend this only if you have linux command line experience. You can always open a support ticket so that we can assist you regarding this.

I followed the guidelines that JPC-Jawad mention and it upgraded me. Very easy if you are comfortable with command line.
