Looking to get a Linux (CentOS) dedi

I currently have a Windows VPS on my account here but I need to upgrade to dedicated server (preferably Linux). I just have 2 questions to ask before I go through with the upgrade.

    1. The app(s) that I need to run on this server have been coded with the intent of running in a Windows environment. Will I be able to install/run Wine on CentOS so that I can run my Windows app(s)?

    2. Is there any kind of assistance with moving my site (mainly the databases) from my VPS to the new dedi server?

    Hi,

    1. Wine should run fine on CentOS. The problem would be your applications. It really depends what they do, what they were written in, and how well they were written.

    2. This would be a non-standard migration but if you just have some MySQL databases that need to be dumped and restored we should be able to handle that for you.

Is there any reason why your going with a Linux dedicated server instead of a Windows Dedicated server?

I would definitely rather get a Windows server, but the extra $25/month is not something I want to deal with. That is $25/month and not just a one-time fee, right? I figured getting the Linux box and just running Wine to do what I need would be the most cost-effective solution.

    Hi,

Yes, unfortunately the $25/mo is a monthly license fee that we pay to Microsoft.

I would suggest you test your applications in Wine before hand to make sure they do work properly.

What type of applications are you intending to run?

    ASP.Net?
    PHP?

They are just simple C/C++ console apps. I was told that as long as they did not require graphics they should run fine on Wine.

    Hi,

My Windows programming experience is basic but as long as they were written properly you shouldn't have too much trouble. If you have the source code making them work shouldn't be too difficult.
