Exclamation Warning about inodes and disk space

Believe it or not, Jag is one of the best hosting companies. They recently upgraded my account for free and gave me a bunch of extra goodies!

One of those goodies, is some extra disk space for my VPS. So what am I going on about here? I wanted to warn others than if you increase your disk space on a VPS, make sure you open a ticket and ask support to increase the inode limit as well.

Otherwise, you will run out of inodes long before you run out of disk space! This happened to me last year and the MySQL database got corrupted.

If you are not sure how much disk/inode you have left in your VPS, run the following script:

    Server Memory Usage (script)

This is ONE of the things that sets JaguarPC apart from all other web hosts.

    The 'dirty little secret' is...

While most web hosts offer unlimited everything these days, behind the curtains, they severely limit your inodes.

At other hosts, when you max out your inodes -- that's it -- you're done -- and they show you to the door.

    Doing a quick search: http://www.google.com/search?q=out+o... web+hosts%22 (Google)

Picked at random: http://www.lexiconn.com/blog/2010/09...d-hosting-lie/ (How Web Hosts Flat Out Lie)

Last week we examined the truth behind uptime guarantees in hosting. A 100% uptime guarantee is not really what most people expect.

Today I’ll try to (briefly) rant discuss one of my pet peeves when it comes to hosting – The promise of unlimited hosting.

    There is always a limit

Until they create the infinite hard drive or the never ending fiber optic connection, there is no such thing as unlimited when it comes to hosting.

    Unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth!

    Never run out of space

Host as many domains as you want!
    Inode limit

The account is limited to 50,000 files. If you have an ecommerce store with a few thousand products, you’ll exceed this limit in no time.
You can find 1000s of complaints about inode limitations at all web hosts. And, at most web hosts, this is a hard limit. They won't change it, period. Exclamation point!

Moreover, once you reach your inode limit, you're in violation of your TOS, and they'll TOSS you into the street.

In my experience, Tech Support at JagPC doesn't have any problem increasing your inode limit. They don't have to contact senior management, et cetera. They'll lock n' load you in a matter of minutes.

I judge that JaguarPC is unique in this -- one in a million -- and it's a major benefit of being hosted here, IMO!

I had to ask for an inode boost to my VPS about a week ago. Today my VPS limits were upgraded, but I noticed that my inodes were not. Not a huge deal because I have enough to last a while, but it is something I need to keep in the back of my mind.

    Indeed, Jag rocks!

This is the second time I had to ask for an inode raise. Unfortunately, I wasn't warned the first time I hit that limit and the MySQL database was corrupted. I think there should be a warning or something, but there isn't. My little script executes when I login to my VPS, so every day I get a clear idea of how much usage I have left.
