Creating local website backups via FTP - WinSCP

I've just completed a local backup of my site using FTP. I exported my database via logging into my control panel normally, but transferred files via FTP, specifically WinSCP.

As I am unversed with Unix/SSH, this is currently my only available means to perform a local backup. Suggestions here would be appreciated.

My issue is the FTP file transfer time, should a transfer of <50MB take half an hour to complete? Seems a little excessive.

What could be the cause of slow FTP transfer speeds? My site is Drupal powered if that has any ramifications.

That seems like a really long time, but I can't answer that question. A lot depends on your connection speed, your location and your hosting plan's bandwidth package.

I would try using WinSCP in SCP mode.
    Good luck

It's been set to SCP mode, and I am using a VPS package. Shouldn't that mean high bandwidth?

Like I said, I can't answer that question without all of the variables accounted for.

How's your site acting via HTTP? Pages opening fast enough?

Take some traceroutes (or use WinMTR) and open a ticket to support if you don't see any obvious problems.

    Good luck!

    I think "newtexan" or something.

I have configured WinSCP on my system using this guide: TUTORIAL: Configuring WinSCP for JagPC servers.

Yes, Vin's suggested setup! It still works with the current versions.
