    Yum Update

I decided to run yum update and it ended up breaking my server to the point the only way to restore service was to restore it. What is the proper way to run yum update and not blow up my server? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

What exactly did you run? "yum update" that is all? Do you have the output saved? What did it do? What was broken?

I run yum update all the time but it does not break the server. I have never seen any server break to the point where you need to restore it. Really. I'm surprised on what could break a server? Please share more details.

Masood sorry for the vague first post. I ran yum update --exclude='*samba*'. I did not save the output, unfortunately. Once I issued that command the server went and downloaded all of the updates and started installing them. Once this was complete I was still ssh'ed into the box I decided to reboot it just to be safe. I issued the reboot command from the ssh session. The VPS rebooted, and Virtuozzo said the VPS came back up but I could not SSH, http, ping, do anything to the VPS. I filed ticket 13291827 with JaguarPC and the tech stated the only way he was able to get the VPS back up and responding to ssh, http, ping was to restore the VPS.

What I could do is I have a backup of the VPS I could run the same command as above and show the output that I get.

I'll check with the tech that worked on that ticket. They didn’t restore the vps as far as I can see. Probably recovered some conflicting binaries. Since you have Virtuozzo VPS (and not openvz on solusvm) it may have broken some VZ dependency. Once I have more details, I'll post here.

Awais worked on this issue and has provided me details on what happened. My suspicion was right. Since you are on a Virtuozzo VPS, it is built using Virtuozzo OS templates. When you run yum update something in the updates broke the dependency. He simply recovered the broken links of OS binaries etc. So the best course of action if you are on Virtuozzo is to let support handle yum upgrades.
