    Upgrading the OS

Just wondering if upgrading the OS (centos) is as simple as yum update or 'update software' in whm, and will it do any damage as far as my website files, folders and permissions go? I'm using centos 5.2 which is rather depreciated, 5.6 has supported packages for PHP 5.3 and centos 6 is out.

more to the point: would running a older OS (centos 5.2) have any negative effects running the latest PHP etc, as opposed to a version (>5.6 ) that supports packages for it? I get some strange errors with a script that should run on the very latest PHP as recommended, but, I get strange 500 internal server errors no one has been able to work out. Could it be a outdated OS pushed into the present showing through?

I'm on a hybrid server. I'll put in a ticket, I was thinking if it was a basic point and click no-brain material I'd do it myself.

Then again if you read my ticket history you'd argue against that.
