Is there a step by step guide for new managed VPS setup? and a few noob questions.

    Hi,

I have a few questions for the VPS gurus here. I have been hosting with jpc since 1999 (or 2000) using shared hosting. I now want to host a website that a jpc CSR says will require a VPS.

I just signed up for a new VPS and I am looking for a step by step guide to start. There is another user that asked a similar question a while back, but the replies from jpc techs only pointed to the knowledge base links, which don't really help clear things up much.

I signed up for the managed whm/cpanel/centos setup. Can someone point me to a tutorial (not necessary from JPC) to get me started?

Also, I noticed that the SolusVM VPS control panel shows 295MB of used memory, but in the WHM server's status, it shows 332216 (332MB) used memory. What is the cause of the discrepancy? This is a fresh setup, I have not installed any extra package. It seems high compare to what I have been reading from various forums.

Is this setup image optimized? Does this fresh setup has hardened security measures or do I have to request it? I asked through a ticket this afternoon, but have not heard back from support.

    TIA

    Hi jaguser,

There are few steps involved to get start with VPS. First you will have to migrate your account(s) or setup a new one through WHM as required and upload data to it. Then you will register private Nameservers and point your sites to them so they can start resolving from your VPS.

For detailed instructions on each of these steps or if you have any questions or confusions I recommend you to please open a ticket so Techs can guide you on how to setup and start using your VPS. Then if you have any special requirements then again Tech support will help you to install/configure them on your VPS.

Regarding memory related issue please open a ticket so Techs can check your VPS and assist you accordingly. Thank you.

That response seems to have completely missed the questions the OP was asking. Much as L1 support tickets do.

"... I am looking for a step by step guide to start"
" Can someone point me to a tutorial (not necessary from JPC) to get me started?"
Opening tickets will not answer either of those two questions. I've been pretty happy with the level of support when I do open tickets, but it's impossible to get anything out of the techs as to why or how.

I strongly recommend the OP visit the VPS Bible. Spring just fifteen of your hard earned, and you're armed to go into the VPS business in a knowledgeable way.

Thanks BT, unfortunately JPC does not seem to have a beginner's guide considering that JPC has many VPS customers and potential customers. I know for sure that JPC lost my VPS subscription revenue for 5-6yrs because I tried to work with a VPS 5-6 yrs ago and gave up because it was not noob friendly. There are other hosts that do have very nice walkthroughs, but they unfortunately are not updated to include newer control panels.

I think Bilal was trying to assist jaguser by making sure that he would have someone to hand hold for the VPS setup since he mentioned that he wasn't too familiar with the process. VPS setup can be intimidating and a hands on approach isn't a bad solution. Questions can sometimes come up with a step by step guide or even a video tutorial.
I am personally grateful for the VPS setup link. It seems to have some really valuable information. I am always looking for quality resources.
Jaguser feel free to come back and share. I am sure you are not the only VPS noob around here and we would like to hear more about your move from shared to VPS.
