I signed up for a dedicated server here and have been trying to set it up over the last week, and finally seem to have everything working, that is except for email.
Dedicated servers here at jaguarpc are bare bones on the software end (no CPANEL, no admin software), but I must assume that that there is basic email software installed...
I'm very experienced with shared servers and admin software normally installed, cpane, plesk, etc...
But, this is my first attempt at dedicated server.
I just learned how to access the root with SSH and can get myself around the system with basic commands and basic understanding, but I can't figure out how to access the server using my EUDORA mail program.
I haven't changed over my DNS pointers to this new server and won't until I get everything fully up.
For example, the dedicated server is set up a user and webspace for user "donsbulb", and the IP address of the server is 66.227.17.203, so I send mail to the server using "donsbulb@[66.227.17.203]", and the mail doesn't bounce back so I have to assume it's delivered (and assume that user "donsbulb" is recognized. Sending to other un-created users such as "abctest@[66.227.17.203]" bounces back, which I'd expect.
Problem is when I try to connect and retreive mail using EUDORA" using user name "donsbulb" and the password assigned, I get the standard "authorization failed" message.
Do I need to somehow specifically assign an email password to a user?
What about using SSH to set up a catchall email address?
I know that "sendmail" is installed as I did a "locate sendmail" using SSH and found lots of things containing this.
Is sendmail just a basic email interface, or is it also used for setting up multiple and catchall email accounts? Or, is there a different program to do this? What program/module is responsible for managing the email? Linux, appache, sendmail, other? I've been to all these different websites and nobody talks much about email management.
I've come a long way in a week, but I seem to have hit a wall here. Perhaps something isn't installed properly on the dedicated server.
When I signed up with Greg, I told him I wanted the dedicated server set up just like my Jaguarepc shared server, except for the CPANEL easy manage option, but I'm thinking something else is missing.
Somebody give me some ideas!
Thanks -
Don Schnapp
