    Silly Me

Silly ME - I just clued in that my reseller account is hosted using a Windows operating system. I think anyway. There are a few things that don't work the way they used to. One is that I have just found out that Windows does not play .flv files. So that makes a lot of work resaving videos I have been using to .swf instead.

Also makes it tough for software that I have been writing for others that has embedded FLV Flash Player - it will probably work fine if they aren't hosting with me - but if they are, it won't. I have spent days of frustration trying to get the FLV player and files to work in my websites - posting on flash site forums and the forum of the FLV Player - - - to no avail. Then I just happened upon an article that briefly mentioned that FLV's don't work with Windows OS. Should have done my homework I guess before writing so much code and converting so many .flv videos.

huh? to my knowledge no JPC Reseller, Shared or SDX Server run Windows. Only Specific VPS Nodes.

JPC Prefers CentOS (re badged RedHat Enterprise)

Well this good to know. I just presumed with the PC thing in the company name. And then when I haven't been able to get .flv videos to work and read about the Windows issue today - - - - just presumed. I may be wrong. Hopefully that is the case.

I gotta run pretty soon, robertwatcher, but...

In order to stream FLVs from your site[s], you need to install a player. Personally, I use FLowPlayer. I think I had to specify a custom MIME too.

Anyway, I started playing around with streaming FLVs and they work just fine on Jag servers!

I haven't completed the project, but here's where it stands right now:

    http://jslime.lenon.com/index2.html

I've tested it using regular ol' MSIE and Fx. See if it plays for you...

It's a little tricky to setup, so if you have any questions, I'll be around tomorrow...

why is it that "PC" means "Windows" to everyone? PC is a hardware Platform, not a operating System. you can run Many OS's on the PC Platform, Linux, BSD, Windows, etc.

In today's common usage, personal computer and PC usually indicate an IBM PC compatible. Due to this association, some manufacturers of personal computers that are not IBM PCs avoid explicitly using the terms to describe their products.

Apple itself uses PC to refer to IBM compatible machines in their commercials

    Hi I'm a MAC.

    And I'm a PC.

which is kinda ironic since Apple last year start using the PC hardware platform, moving away from the MAC Platform

Where did you read that FLV won't work on Windows? I find that hard to believe because the websever only pushes the data down to the client computer, it doesn't "run" anything on the server.

My guess is that you don't have a proper MIME type set up for FLV files. The MIME type is sent in the request headers and is used by the client machine to determine what sotware to use to handle the data it is receiving. In cPanel, under Site > MIME Types, try adding a MIME type of video/x-flv for extension .flv and see what happens.

FLV is fairly new and JPC doesn't seem to have an entry for it in their servers yet.

They don't have one for RAR either, which has been around a LONG time! This is actually a security risk, IMHO! However, I think this is all part of the default cPanel settings, so it's not like it's JPC's fault... they just don't know any better!

Bottom line: Add them to the .htaccess file yourself.

For what it's worth, these are the MIME types that I've to added to my account here:
    Code:
    application/x-bzip2-compressed	.bz2
    application/x-compress .Z
    application/x-gzip .gz
    application/x-rar-compressed .rar
    video/x-flv .flv
I suggest you do the same...
